Frequent Questions

Most likely, you'll have several questions before we start your project. Here's a few that we're frequently asked:

General Information

• How do I get started?
  
  
  Once you have an idea of the areas you’d like to remodel call or email Kari to set up an appointment for your initial consultation.
  
  
• Do you charge a consultation fee?
  
  
  Your initial consultation is free. A nominal fee would be charged for custom samples or custom colors. The charge for custom paint samples would be credited toward the cost of the project should you choose to contract to do the work.
  
  
• Do work with new construction?
  
  
  We do quite a bit of work in new construction homes and businesses. Some finishes have to be done after the air conditioning has been installed and is working. These finishes (crackle, for one) need controlled temperature and humidity to properly cure.
  
  
• What if I'm already working with an interior designer?
  
  
  We’ll work closely with your designer to make sure the finish colors and techniques will coordinate with the style, colors, accessories, and fabrics selected.
  
  
• How do I get on the project schedule?
  
  
  We book on a first come, first served basis. Kari will give you a list of available dates to choose from. Once you have signed the contract and made your deposit the time necessary to complete your project is blocked. We make every effort to begin on the day you have selected however there may be instances where we are a day or two behind due to weather, product availability, or personnel availability. Usually there is sufficient time built into the schedule to catch up if we have a late start.
  
  
• Will I see a sample of my design?
  
  
  On the follow up to your consultation Kari will have prepared a sample or samples for your approval. Once they meet your approval, she can give you an estimate of cost and schedule a time for your project.
  
  

Project Details

• What do I need to do before the project start date?
  
  
  If the room is furnished we will ask you to move all furniture from the room, remove wall art, area rugs, and draperies. If there is furniture that is too large to be removed from the room we ask that it be moved several feet away from the wall to allow space for ladders. Please do not ask us to move large furniture, bookcases, pianos, or other heavy objects.
  
  Kari will discuss what type of base coating is required. In some cases it will be necessary to have an area prepared, prior to beginning the project. Any preparation requirements will be discussed and outlined beforehand.
  
  
• Can I use the room while the project is in progress?
  
  
  Yes you can. We will clean up at the end of each day, and store our supplies in a designated space, for as little disruption as possible.Depending on the complexity of the project we usually will have the room draped with drop cloths, taped and masked, and may have removed some light fixtures. Kitchen cabinet finishes require us to mask the insides of the cabinets. We are sensitive to the fact that we are interfering with your daily routine and do everything we can to expedite each phase of the project to minimize your inconvenience.
  
  
• How long does a project usually take?
  
  
  The size and complexity of the project will determine the length of time necessary for completion. Some wall finishes can be executed in two to three days, others may take two to three weeks. Due to the number of steps involved in finishing cabinetry they typically take longer than a wall finish to complete. The project duration will be thoroughly discussed with you before it is scheduled.
  
  
• Will the walls look exactly like the sample?
  
  
  Every effort is made to deliver a finished product that accurately reflects the sample. Some variables that may cause minor perceived differences include existing textures, lighting, and adjacent wall colors. Your sample is typically on a 2’ x 2’ sample board. Stencils or raised images may appear more dense on a sample than on an entire wall.
  
  
• How far will KWC Designs travel?
  
  
  Our usual range of operation runs from central Houston west to Katy and north of Houston. Most of our clients are in Spring, The Woodlands, Kingwood, Atascocita, Magnolia, Montgomery, Conroe, and Bentwater. We also have done work in Dallas and Austin for special projects. We consider out of town project based on their size and complexity.
  
  
• Does Kari work alone?
  
  
  Kari usually employs a team of three to four painters and finishers. These artists and painters have trained and worked together for a number of years and follow specific finish protocols. Although she seldom does any base painting she is entirely involved in the finish of every project.
  
  
• When is payment due?
  
  
  A deposit of 50 percent of the project total is due at contract signing for projects beginning within the next 60 days. Since Kari is often booked several months in advance, all projects are booked on a first come, first served basis. For projects booked further out, a lower deposit will be required to block the time in the schedule.
